Tech worker tensions lead Amazon workers to strike.

Amazon employees in Seattle declared their intention to strike internally on Monday.

In Slack and email messages, staff organizers called for a walkout on May 31, one week after Amazon's annual shareholder meeting, due to displeasure about layoffs, the return-to-office rule, and Amazon's climate pledges.

“Morale feels like it’s at an all-time low,” said a Los Angeles-based Amazon employee who wants to participate, speaking anonymously to preserve their job. Leadership is unclear in meetings and one-on-ones with coworkers. Amazon workers are uneasy.”

The walkout, which organizers hope will bring 1,000 Seattle-based participants, is part of a larger wave of worry and unrest among Silicon Valley employees as hiring freezes follow major layoffs amid a probable recession.
