Russia launches missile strikes on Kyiv after overnight barrage

Russian soldiers have begun an extraordinary daylight missile bombardment against Kyiv, prompting civilians to escape to bomb shelters.

The Ukrainian military intercepted all 11 ballistic and cruise missiles launched towards the city around 11am. One was hurt. 

 After a series of loud explosions as missiles were intercepted and air defense smoke filled the morning sky, Kyiv residents who were used to nighttime strikes fled to metro stations and other shelters.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy tweeted a video of scared youngsters rushing and shouting along a Kyiv street to a bomb bunker to air raid sirens.

“This is an ordinary weekday,” Zelenskiy commented on Telegram.

Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv's mayor, tweeted a photo of a rocket motor burning on a crowded street on social media.

He said: “Another difficult night for the capital. However, our soldiers' expertise prevented infrastructural and other damage from the barbaric air assault on Kyiv.

After a series of nighttime strikes on Kyiv by Iranian Shahed drones and cruise missiles, the attack deployed short-range Iskander ballistic missiles.
