Memorial Day weekend residents evacuate. Tri-State Area

This Memorial Day weekend, millions of people are going on trips.

In the Tri-State Area, roads and highways were packed with cars going to their places.

On Friday night, CBS2 talked to people on the roads and at airports.

The unofficial start of summer is here, and Vietnam veteran Delores Hampton flew in to spend time with her older sister.

Atlanta's Hampton said, "We're just happy to be here and happy to see each other when we can."

Flights kept coming and going from the busy Newark Liberty Airport. This weekend will be one of the busiest in years for air travel across the country, with nearly 3.4 million people, which is a post-pandemic high.

One couple from Nebraska barely made it to their flight, but they got here without any problems.

Mark Faubion said, "I think we got to the airport 30 minutes before our flight left, so we had no trouble at all getting through security."
