Florida Governor DeSantis enters 2024 contest with Musk on Twitter.

On Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, putting him in direct competition with former President Donald Trump.

DeSantis' campaign staff said he would announce on Twitter during a conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk. He will also declare his candidacy with the FEC.

NBC initially announced the news. Musk denied backing DeSantis on a Wall Street Journal webcast.

"I'm not at this time planning to endorse any particular candidate, but I am interested in Twitter being somewhat of a town square," Musk added.

In November, DeSantis won reelection easily. He may be Trump's strongest challenger for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump backed DeSantis during his first race for governor, but DeSantis has since developed his own political persona. He may be the party's future at 44.

Ron DeSantis should announce on Twitter. "This way he doesn’t have to interact with people and the media can’t ask him any questions," claimed a Trump aide who requested anonymity.

DeSantis secured an easy victory in November for his second term, establishing himself as a prominent figure within the Republican party. His impressive fundraising abilities and growing popularity pose a significant challenge to Trump's aspirations of winning the Republican nomination for the presidency once more.
