4 guys detained for dangling Vinícius Júnior effigy off bridge

Spanish police detained four men Tuesday for hanging a Vinícius Júnior effigy from a motorway bridge in Madrid in January.

Two days after the latest racist abuse at the Brazil striker in a Spanish league game against Valencia, the arrests were made.

The Copa del Rey rivalry between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid began with the effigy hanging by its neck. The banner said "Madrid hates Real."

A black figure with Vinícius' name was fastened to a rope and hung from an overpass in the Spanish capital when it was still dark.

Police claimed three of the detainees were members of one of Atletico's fan organizations and one was a follower. Some were previously arrested.

Though they denied it, Atletico's ultras routinely utilize the banner's hate message.

19–24-year-old guys were arrested. Authorities detected several during high-risk matches. On Tuesday, images from the police showed them entering handcuffed and accompanied by agents.

Spanish media said that authorities had identified the offenders using security cameras but had not taken action until now. Police did not disclose whether the arrests were related to the Sunday abuse of Vinícius.
